Painter, illustrator and printmaker Wesley W. Bates began wood engraving in 1979 and over his 35 years of engraving, he has become a master of the medium. Wesley as won numerous awards for his engravings and his work is exhibited internationally. He has illustrated books for many of the major publishing houses in North America and England and he is commissioned regularly by Fine Press publishers to engrave images to accompany their hand made books.
Wesley has been teaching wood engraving for more that twenty years. He has been Artist in Residence at St. Michael’s Printshop in St. John’s, Newfoundland and The Joseph Schneider Haus, Kitchener, Ontario. Wesley has been Guest Artist at The Vancouver Museum, Vancouver, British Columbia; Fine Arts Dept, Stephen F. Austin University, Nacagdoches, Texas; King Library Press, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky; Larkspur Press, Monterey, Kentucky; Cincinnati Art Academy, Cincinnati, Ohio; Dundas Valley School of Art, Dundas, Ontario; Sheridan College, Oakville, Ontario and the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, Toronto, Ontario.
Wesley set up shop in Clifford Ontario in 1999 and reestablished West Meadow Press in a store front on the main street. West Meadow Press is now his printshop studio where he engraves, and prints limited edition engravings,and books. Wesley also teaches wood engraving, and other printmaking mediums, letterpress, and book arts.
